WHAT IS BAPTISM? Once a person has invited Jesus Christ into their life as Lord and Savior of their life, the next step is BAPTISM. Baptism
is a public demonstration of one’s personal acknowledgement and acceptance of Jesus Christ. In baptism , a person is submerged in water as a symbolic representation of cleansing and of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3-4). The burial of the believer in baptism
is the simplest way of stating the great facts of salvation.
Water baptism does not produce salvation, salvation comes through the verbal profession of faith in Jesus Christ, but once saved, the
newfound believer submits to the ordinance of water baptism .
In other words, we are not baptized to be saved but because we are saved.
BAPTISM represents the death and the resurrection of Christ. But it goes even further than that. When we are baptized, we picture to the world not simply the death and resurrection of Christ, but also that
through our faith in Christ as Savior that we are dead to sin and alive unto righteousness. This means that we declare, in a public way, that our life now belongs to Christ, and for Him we now live and move and have our being. Baptism is simply an act of loving obedience to Christ by means of which we enter the Church.
In unison with confession, baptism is the door to the Church. Galatians 3:26-27 declares, “For ye are all children of God by faith in Jesus Christ. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” This is the commission Christ gave to His disciples:
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world”(Matthew 28:19-20). And one of the things that Jesus commands of us to do as His followers is to be baptized.
